For Greek returning citizens, vehicle must be in owner’s possession for at least six months.
Restrictions apply to vehicles with diesel engines.
Greek Repatriates – returning citizens must personally attend clearance of motor vehicles and pick up motor vehicles from port by them selves.
Duties vary according to make, model and length of time car owned.
For Greek Repatriates – returning citizens the certificate of repatriation allows them to import the vehicle free of duties and taxes. The Metikisia documents and further information on how to fill them in can be obtained by the consulate at origin.
However, re – registration of the vehicles’ plates will be needed but this takes place within 3 – 6 months after the importation date of the vehicle in Piraeus port. Vehicle needs to be inspected by the Ministry of Transportation (KTEO) and then goes back to customs office for re – registration. We cannot determine the costs for re – registration.
Motor vehicle needs to be insured when arrives in Piraeus port and insurance certificate (which should be valued in Greece) needs to be shown to the customs authorities otherwise vehicle will be insured upon arrival at port for 30 days.
